Our Whole Lives (OWL) Classes
Our Whole Lives: Sexuality and Our Faith
As a congregation we are proud to offer Our Whole Lives (OWL), a comprehensive, lifespan sexuality education curricula. Our Whole Lives helps participants make informed and responsible decisions about their sexual health and behavior. With a holistic approach, Our Whole Lives provides accurate, developmentally appropriate information about a range of topics, including relationships, gender identity, sexual orientation, sexual health, and cultural influences on sexuality. We will be offering classes for children in 1st-2nd grades, 5th-6th grades, and 11th-12th grade levels.
The 1st/2nd grade OWL class will be available soon, stay tuned for upcoming details! This first level of Our Whole Lives can help you educate your child about birth, babies, bodies, and families. You will be actively involved as your child learns through songs, stories, activities and at-home projects that promote family dialogue.
The 5th and 6th grade OWL class will take place over 3-4 Sunday sessions this spring and be lead by Julia and Rev. Nathan Mesnikoff. This level focuses on learning about and discussing the physical and emotional changes of puberty. Participants will read It’s Perfectly Normal by Robie H. Harris, and examine topics such as values and sexuality, communication and decision-making. Each session includes a HomeLink – a homework activity for parents and children to complete together.
The 11th and 12th grade OWL class will be available soon, stay tuned for upcoming details! This class usually meets once a month on Sunday afternoons. Using a comprehensive approach, this program helps senior-high youth gain the knowledge, life principles and skills they need to express their sexuality in life-enhancing ways.
