It has been said that the role of a religious community is to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. Yet, we are living in a time when we are ALL feeling quite uncomfortable! What is the image we now hold of ourselves as a religious community? Do we like the challenge to social duty and cultural influence? Or do we want our church activities to be primarily be focused on hope and endurance? We find ourselves facing questions like: how do I handle my discomfort if I am politically different than others? how do I handle cross-cultural interactions when there is some misunderstanding? what do I do if I find myself feeling uncomfortable or having some misgivings? what exactly is the hope of beloved community?
